Walking art is about exploring the places in which we live, in new ways. It’s about creating connections with place and with each other, and it’s about taking ownership of our environments: making the spaces we live in, ours.
Connect Housing asked me to develop a myths and monsters walk for service users, to encourage engagement in Dewsbury. It was an oppertunity to get people out and about and into the local community: to get people interacting with staff, artists and each other. Over three walks, we drew, talked and photographed our way around the town, looking for some of Dewsbury’s myths and legends, and creating some of our own. The undisputed king of Mythogeography is Phil Smith, and I doff my cap to him in the making of this project.
So join us in exploring Dewsbury’s Myths and Monsters! Explore the map, and see what (and who!) we found lurking on the streets of Dewsbury.
