Today we visited two shops that had been found selling fur. The first, Seasons, had been selling fur-trim boots but was again fur-free when we checked it out. The other, a second-hand shop on Division Street, had been selling fur coats.

Although conventional fur shops are our priority, the sale and wearing of vintage fur perpetuates the idea that it is acceptable and fashionable to wear the bodies of tortured animals, and thereby provides a route back to social acceptance for the conventional fur industry. Furthermore, fur marketed as vintage is not always as it seems – undercover investigations in fur dealers have shown that conventional fur is widely passed off as vintage fur.

The vintage shop agreed to stop selling fur after a couple of hours of us flyering and protesting outside, but we will continue to inspect it, to check that they keep to their pledge.

Today some members of SAF protested outside Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, in Hillsborough, after the recent death of Royal Raider. This dog died after colliding with several other dogs on the track, prompting a sympathiser to notify Greyhound Action, but tens of thousands of greyhounds – healthy or injured while racing – are killed every year across the UK.

We have more protests planned for Saturday 29th January and Tuesday 1st February. Please email us for more details.

Today we marked International Animal Rights Day (IARD) with a candlelight vigil outside the University of Sheffield, where 30 000 animals are experimented on and killed every year. IARD is coordinated by Sheffield-based animal rights group Uncaged, and is marked around the world with vigils, information stalls and demonstrations.

For more information about animal experiments at the University of Sheffield, see our campaign page.

One of the most effective ways in which SAF helps to raise awareness of the many benefits for people, planet and animals of vegan living is by holding free food fairs. We held our first one in Dec ’06, then another in Dec ’09 (a report of which can be found here), and are planning to hold our next one on Sat 4th Dec ’10. These events are a great way to reach out to the wider public, to inform, educate, dispell myths and misconceptions and to show how delicious vegan food can be!

Saturday 4th December 2010 – Free vegan food fayre from 11am – 4pm at the Quaker Meeting House, 10 St. James Street, Sheffield S1 2EW

It’s mainly aimed at attracting non-vegans to come along to sample vegan food so please try to bring along a friend or two or tell non-vegans about the event if you’re attending yourselves. There will be a wide range of delicious free vegan food on offer, and there will also be a S.A.F Vegan & Animal Rights Info stall, a Sea Shepherd Stall and a Doris Banham Dog Rescue Stall. As well as cooking demos, a talk on veganism, film showings and a raffle.

Running order on the day:
11.30am – Bread Baking (by Max),
12.30pm – Vegan Curries (by Nirmal of Nirmals Restaurant),
1.30pm – Chocolate Truffles (by Jonny of the Blue Moon Cafe).
2.30pm – Why Vegan Talk (by Olly)

Throughout the day the new 30 minute Vegan Society film Making The Connection will be shown too.

To help us put on the fair we’ve recieved invaulable help from a number of companies who’ve been kind enough to provide us with some free samples. Please visit their sites to find out about them and to see the range of other vegan friendly products they sell. Sheffield’s own Lembas have been kind enough to supply us with some of their stock, if you live within an 80 mile radius of Sheffield then these are the guys to purchase vegan food in bulk from!

Other companies who’ve donated samples are Provamel (soya milk products), Beanies Health Foods (Fry’s brand faux ‘meat’ products), Bute Island Food (Sheese faux ‘cheese’), Plamil (range of vegan products), Booja Booja (vegan truffles), Meridian (range of vegan products), Sweet Freedom (honey alternatives), Pomegreat (fruit juice), Panda (liquorice sweets) and Yoah (vegan toiletries)

This is the SAF event of the year and is always loads of fun – so hope to see you there! :-D

Every year Animal Aid organise a London Compassionate Christmas Fayre and for the last few years they’ve also been holding a successful Christmas Fayre in the South West as well. So to increase awareness around having a compassionate Christmas and to help raise funds for campaign groups, and to let ethical companies sell their wares to a wider audience it was decided that this year there would also be a Fayre held in the North, specifically Sheffield as we have good links with the members of Animal Aid who organised the Fayre. Around 300 – 400 people attended the first ever Northern Fayre, which was deemed by all to be a success. Many people came to make purchases and to learn about campaign groups and issues they may not have been familiar with previously and to socialise with likeminded people. All the stall holders seemed happy with the amount of interest they received and the sales they made. Added to this was delicious vegan food served up by Sheffield’s Compassionate Catering and members of S.A.F, which not only led to many satisfied customers who took the time to sit and relax with their food and chat with friends, it also raised a good chunk of money for S.A.F itself which we’ll now use to plow back into our campaigns. In conclusion a good day was had by all, thanks go out to Animal Aid, the stall holders and all the volunteers who helped to make the day run smoothly and turn out well. Look out for another instalment next year!

On Sat 30th Oct, 2010, members of S.A.F held a funeral march with graphic images of factory farm conditions and gave out many leaflets to members of the public on a busy day in Sheffield city centre. The aim was to raise awareness of the realities of factory farming and it’s terrible effects on animals lives and on human health alike, due to the many diseases caused by raising animals for consumption in disgusting conditions. Twelve major diseases that start in factory farm settings that may go on to harm and even kill people include salmonellosis, campylobacter infection, BSE, bird flu and swine flu. Swine flu has killed more than 18,000 people around the world, while in the UK alone, it is estimated that salmonella and campylobacter are responsible for around 450,000 cases each year. The public were also exposed to the message that living a lifestyle free of animal products is the only solution to put an end to this needless suffering.

It was made possible by Animal Aid who provided the photo boards, leaflets and booklets which were given out to the public. Please see here for more information about this subject, which includes a link to download the ‘Is factory farming making you sick?’ booklet and info on how to order copies. You can also see Animal Aid’s recent powerful short film shot in U.K factory farms between 2007-2010 here.

A new site has been started, called Break Every Chain, aiming to distribute stickers and badges promoting animal liberation and other emancipatory movements. From the site:

Break Every Chain is a collective producing resources with which to combat speciesism, fascism, racism, sexism, homophobia and all other forms of oppression. Any money made will go towards producing more materials, or will be donated to grassroots activist groups and projects.

Have a look here.

This week SAF have taken action against the use of animals in entertainment, demonstrating on Thursday at Circus Mondao in Dronfield and on Friday at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium in Sheffield.
