Two websites have been established to archive old animal liberation zines and magazines; Conflict Gypsy (the name was a derogatory term coined by Fur Commission USA spokesperson Teresa Platt to slam the supposedly rootless activists who wandered around the country causing trouble), and the more German-oriented Animal Liberation Archive.

It’s just a couple of months until Sheffield’s second annual anarchist bookfair. It will take place on Saturday 21st May, from 10am-6pm at Bank Street Arts, 32-40 Bank Street. Sheffield Animal Friends will have a stall with literature, merchandise and probably vegan cake!

SAF has members with various different political backgrounds, but anarchism is undoubtedly influential with the animal liberation movement, both in terms of theorising animal exploitation and in terms of thinking about how we structure our movement. For more information about the bookfair, see here.

On Friday 18th February a new exhibition opens at Sheffield Institute of the Arts Gallery, examining “new ways in which animals appear in contemporary art and the contingent ethics and aesthetics to which such practice may be subject”. Animals have often been represented in art in anthropocentric terms, as status symbols or allegorical devices, but this exhibition features work that imagines animals’ own experiences and viewpoints.

The Animal Gaze runs in Sheffield until 20th March. For more information please visit the Sheffield Institute of the Arts website.

On Saturday 21st May, the Run For ALL Life will take place at Ecclesall Wood in Sheffield. Participants can choose to run a 5 or 10 kilometer run, and entrance is free but runners need to raise a minimum of £10 in sponsorship. The money raised will go to the Dr Hadwen Trust, which funds non-animal medical research.

To book your place, please call Dawn Biram on 0114 2356907 or email her at hadwen.run@gmail.com

Yesterday six of us protested outside Owlerton Stadium, in protest at the exploitation and killing of greyhounds by the racing industry. Around 30 000 dogs are killed each year by the British greyhound racing industry – many of them perfectly healthy, but too slow or old to win races.

Please email us at sheffieldanimalfriends@gmail.com if you’d like to get involved with the campaign to close the track.

Today we visited two shops that had been found selling fur. The first, Seasons, had been selling fur-trim boots but was again fur-free when we checked it out. The other, a second-hand shop on Division Street, had been selling fur coats.

Although conventional fur shops are our priority, the sale and wearing of vintage fur perpetuates the idea that it is acceptable and fashionable to wear the bodies of tortured animals, and thereby provides a route back to social acceptance for the conventional fur industry. Furthermore, fur marketed as vintage is not always as it seems – undercover investigations in fur dealers have shown that conventional fur is widely passed off as vintage fur.

The vintage shop agreed to stop selling fur after a couple of hours of us flyering and protesting outside, but we will continue to inspect it, to check that they keep to their pledge.
