Tattoo Studios
It’s not commonly known but a fair amount of tattoo ink is not suitable for vegans, due to the pigment being made from burning down animal bones (mainly blacks inks though sometimes colour inks as well). Also the second part of the ink is a liquid which acts as a vehicle to carry the pigment. Most of the time the vehicle is made from glycerin. Glycerin is usually made from either animal fats or derived from vegetable sources for vegan inks.
If you like the work of an artist ask them if they use any of these inks, as these are all suitable for vegans: *Stable, *Eternal, *Classic – (all including black), *Intenze, *Waverly, *Unique, *Dermaglo, *Starbrite – (all colours but not black) (used by Scapegoat, Portland who are a world renowned studio) and *Pelikan (for black). If they are funny with you, you don’t have to put up with it as it’s your body at the end of the day, and you decide what happens to it. For aftercare there are some vegan brands out there to buy on the internet such as www.afterinked.com
Here are some studios in Sheffield and near by that use vegan ink:
37-38 High St, Doncaster, DN1 1DL
Math states on his page that his work is ‘vegan safe’, he appears to travel guesting at different studios but his home seems to be at Limited Edition Tattoo in Doncaster, though he also worked out of Thou Art in Sheffield as well. Best thing would be to get in touch with him if you like his work and see when he’ll next be in around in Donny for an appointment. This site shows his style off work.
Unit 8, The Forum, 127-129 Devonshire St, Sheffield S3 7SB
Tacho has recently opened his own studio here and he produces fine Japanese and Old School tattoos. He can use Pelikan black and Eternal colours he’s friendly and accomodating so have a chat with him and mention which inks are suitable and he should be able to cater for your needs.
Leeds, LS6
Diego only does high quality custom tattoos by appointment only, so you can’t go into the studio just for a look around or to choose some generic flash for your tattoo. He is very open to listening and is accomodating, he has a few different vegan inks, have the list with you though so you’re able to remind him which you want and he’ll execute a great design with your ideas and create a very attractive tattoo afterwards.
12 Doncaster Gate, Rotherham, S65 1DJ
Guy Tinsley works out of a studio above a hairdressers, which oddly you have to enter to ascend the stairs in the centre of the salon to reach his work space. He produces good quality work and knows what ink is vegan if you tell him that’s what you require though have the afore mentioned list with you just in case.
